N.B. This article was written for Plesk 8.x, but the process is largely similar in Plesk 9.x. Please contact Support if you require any assistance.

Running your own name servers will require 2 IP addresses. Please email support for your second IP address if it has not already been assigned.

Choose a domain to use for your name servers, it must be a domain you control. This domain will need to be set up in Plesk.

Pick a sub-domain and assign a corresponding IP address to identify each name server, e.g.

  • ns1.example.com 91.192.193.1
  • ns2.example.com 91.192.193.2

Log into Plesk Server Administrator as admin. Go to Domains > example.com > DNS Settings.

Click on Add Record, then for each name server add an A type record and its corresponding IP address.

You should also add two corresponding NS type record for each name server. The “Enter domain name box should be left blank.

Next go to Server > DNS Settings to configure the default settings which will be applied to each domain you add to Plesk in future.
Remove the following entries (they will not be needed):

Host

Record type

Value

<domain>.

NS

ns.<domain>.

<ip> / 24

PTR

<ip>

ns.<domain>.

A

<ip>

Then click on Add New DNS record:

Record type: NS

Enter domain name: (Leave this blank)

Enter name server: ns1.example.com

Repeat this for your second name server record.

You should now contact your registrar to update the name server record for your domain to your newly set up name servers records with the corresponding IP addresses, e.g.

  • ns1.example.com 91.192.193.1

  • ns2.example.com 91.192.193.2

Once this has been updated, please allow 24-48 hours for the changes to propagate and your name servers should be ready to use.
